Sparkenhoe New Zealand Romney's
"Having an aggressive breeding program to produce low input maternal sheep that thrive on grazed forage alone"
The Romney is known for its hardiness and high maternal traits. Our flock are all lambed outside. We use the New Zealand based recording system SIL and are aiming to produce rams and ewes that work well on low input systems.

Performance Recorded Traits
We performance record all of our ewes and their lambs each year. Birth weight, meat yield, number born per litter, survivability of lambs, weaning weight, Dag score lambs and ewes, worm FEC, adult size, ewe condition score.
Ewes are selected for their longevity, good feet and mothering ability. If a ewe goes lame or has to be helped at lambing we will not keep her offspring for breeding and she will not make next years lambing!
We select rams for sale from the top 10% of the flock and only retain breeding ewes from the top 20% of the flock.
Our rams have successfully mated 100 ewes/year.
Why We Chose New Zealand Romney’s
Looking to the future we though that subsidies might be removed. Looking at what was happening in New Zealand and how the farmers out there had already overcome this financial hit, we adopted a system that would require a lot less input per animal all year round. We didn't want a big sheep as you have to feed them, we wanted easy to lamb ewes that live on forge producing twins year on year.
